Lost Boyz frontman Mr. Cheeks finds himself front and center again as he prepares for the release of his second solo album, Back Again, the anticipated follow-up to his smash hit single "Lights Camera Action" and the album, John P. Kelly, which, combined, sold more than 600,000 units.
In a dramatic departure from the beat-driven uptempo "Lights Camera Action," Cheeks releases the slow, R&B-flavored "Crush on You" as the first single from Back Again. The irresistible ballad is fashioned in the tradition of the Lost Boyz' early hit "Renee" (from 1995's Legal Drug Money CD.) "Crush On You" features R&B singer/producer Mario Winans who pleasantly offsets Mr. Cheeks' raw, raspy rap style.
In true Mr. Cheeks fashion, Back Again entertains and enlightens, telling stories and spitting truths from one track to the next. From "Reminisce" (featuring Pete Rock & CL Smooth along with newcomer and labelmate Journalist), which pays homage to fallen souls and rap pioneers, to the old school-flavored title song, which borrows from Rose Royce's familiar "Car Wash" track. Mr. Cheeks' second coming is bound for success.
Born Terrance Kelly in Queens, New York, Mr. Cheeks, along with fellow Lost Boyz rappers Pretty Lou, Spigg Nice and Freaky Tah emerged in 1996 with their gold-selling debut Legal Drug Money, which was followed by 1997's certfied gold Love Peace & Nappiness, The group released their third album, LB IV Life, shortly after Freaky Tah was tragically killed in 1999 - on Mr. Cheeks' birthday.
Mr. Cheeks' latest effort, which features production by P Diddy, Mario Winans, Bink, "(Lights Camera Action)" and Mr. Sexx, displays the most versatile Mr. Cheeks fans have seen in his 10 years as a recording artist.
